ISO 14064
ISO 14064 is an internationally recognised GHG accounting, reporting and verification standard. ISO 14064 is broadly compatible with the GHG Protocol standards, covering many of the same topics and addressing the same issues in a similar manner.

ISO 14064 is divided into three parts, summarised in the table below. ISO 14065, as noted in the table addresses GHG Accreditation.

Table 1: ISO 14064 and ISO 14065
ScopeReference Standard
OrganisationISO 14064 part 1 – Greenhouse gases: specification with guidance at the organisation level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals.
ProjectsISO 14064 part 2 – Greenhouse gases: specification with guidance at the project level for quantification, monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions reductions and removal enhancements.
Validation and VerificationISO 14064 part 3 – Greenhouse gases: specification with guidance for the validation and verification of greenhouse gas assertions.
AccreditationISO 14065 – Greenhouse gases: specification for greenhouse gas validation and verification bodies for use in accreditation and other forms of recognition.

Implementing ISO 14064 is intended to achieve the following benefits:
  • promote consistency, transparency and credibility in GHG quantification, monitoring, reporting and verification;
  • enable organisations to identify and manage GHG-related liabilities, assets and risks;
  • facilitate the trade of GHG allowances or credits, and
  • support the design, development and implementation of comparable and consistent GHG schemes or programmes.
  • ISO 14064 can be used by companies or organisations intending to perform detailed analysis of their GHG emissions. Unlike the GHG Protocol ISO 14064 focuses more on guidance on what should be included rather than how the information is included.
